Colorado Fighter Max Smith Earns Spot In 2008
International Fight League Draft. This past weekend,
Team Sanchez fighter Max Smith, who fights under the
Frankie Sanchez stable in Aurora, Colorado, earned a
spot in the 2008 International Fight League (IFL)
draft.Smith is a pro MMA fighter with a current
record of 3-1. He was a standout high school and
college wrestler at Ponderosa high school and Adams
State College. Smith was a 2x high school All
American wrestler and began training MMA in 2006. As
an amateur MMA fighter, Max Smith was 4-1. In 2006
he placed 2nd in the advanced division of the
Pancrace submission wrestling nationals and in 2007
1st in the advanced grappling division at the
Colorado championships. His only loss in the pro
ranks came when his last opponent weighed in 12
pounds overweight. Smith took the fight, but later
regretted and admitted that the 185 pound weight
class was just too much for a 170 pound fighter. |
 |
Saturday October 27, 2007 Smith headed to
Schaumburg, Illinois for the last tryouts for the
2008 IFL season. The day began with over 100
fighters in his 170 pound weight class. After many
drills and grappling watches, Smith advanced to the
semifinal round. He dominated in the semifinals and
advanced to the finals. In the finals, he again
dominated his opponent with leg kicks and later
submitted him.
During the tryouts, Smith impressed IFL coach Pat
Miletich. Miletich is the head coach of last season
IFL team champions the Silver Backs. Pat Miletich
talked with Smith and told him that it could be a
good chance that Max Smith would be a Silver Back
next season.
The International Fight League is the world’s first
team-based professional mixed martial arts league,
bringing you the most action-packed fighting events
possible. Competitions are decided with a best of
five series between two teams of five fighters each,
using a blend of boxing, kickboxing, submission
grappling, and wrestling (collectively known as
mixed martial arts, or MMA) to win matches by
knockout, submission, or judges’ decision. The teams
are coached by world-renowned veterans of the sport,
many of whom still compete in various superfights
throughout the season.
Matches consist of up to three four-minute rounds,
fought inside a five-roped boxing ring. Each team
has one representative fighter in each of the five
weight classes: lightweight (155 lbs.), welterweight
(170 lbs.), middleweight (185 lbs.), light
heavyweight (205 lbs.), heavyweight (265 lbs.).
The teams with the best overall records at the end
of the regular season (January – June), advance to
the postseason (August – September) to compete for
the World Team Championship and the IFL Championship
Ring. |

Team
Sanchez Fighters Dominate In Two MMA Events
Miixed martial arts fighters from
the Frankie Sanchez training camp have done great in
the last two weeks of competition. On August 31,
2007 Team Sanchez amateur fighters Omar Gonzalez and
Joe Kelso from Monte Vista, Colorado entered the

earned his first win by "Rear Naked Choke" at 2:39

Diego Sanchez (17-1), has officially left Team
Jackson and has moved to California. Diego who is
slated to take on Jon Fitch (14-2) at UFC 76, has
trained with Greg Jackson his entire career in
Albuquerque, New Mexico. Rumor has it he will now be
training with Rob Garcia in California.
The winner will gain ground in the UFC’s stacked
welterweight division, but possibility of a title
shot could be a long way off. Current champ Matt
Serra will face Matt Hughes at a Dec. 29
Pay-Per-View Event, and the winner of UFC 74’s
main-card bout between Koscheck and Georges St.
Pierre has already been guaranteed a title shot by
UFC President Dana White.
This is the latest blow to Greg Jackson's team
following a string of losses by Team Jackson
fighters, including Sanchez, Keith Jardine (12-3-1)
and Nate Marquardt (25-7-2). |

Ring of Fire 30: DOMINATION! The 12 bout MMA event
will take place on Saturday, September 15th 2007 at
the Broomfield Event Center in Broomfield, Colorado.
UFC, K-1 and Strikeforce veteran, Duane BANG! Ludwig
headlines a talent packed fight card. Ludwig will
return to fight for his hometown crowd on the heels
of his Showtime PPV appearance in June. Ludwig faced
UK based fighter Paul Daley, and was on the
recieving end of TKO at the end of the first round.
"My timing was off, and I just couldn't seem to get
my rythym going in that fight." Ludwig and Daley
were the "swing" bout on the card, a spot that means
you have to be ready to go at anytime during the
event. "We were called on deck twice, and then
brought back to the locker room. It kind of messed
with me a bit." said Ludwig
The full fight card will be released soon. The card
will have International appeal with fighters coming
from 3 countries including multiple PPV veterans.
Look for some big names along with the hottest new
talent as well. |

Eric Morales, David Diaz; Both Have Something to
Prove. This Saturday, August 4th, Erik Morales will
take on David Diaz in the ‘War For Four’ at the
Allstate Arena in Chicago, Illinois on PVP. Team
Sanchez would like to wish WBC World Champion David
Diaz good luck this weekend. Diaz will fight boxing
legend Eric Morales Saturday on Pay per view.
Frankie Sanchez and David Diaz fought 8 hard rounds
in 2003 at DePaul University in Chicago. Diaz won a
close fight by decision and Sanchez gave him all he
could handle. The ‘four’ in this title refers to the
fact that if Morales, 48-5 (34), wins this bout he
will become the first Mexican to claim major belts
in four different weight classes. |
 |
Diaz is a
solid fighter who was an outstanding amateur. He is
roughly the same age as Morales, but his career has
traversed a vastly different path. A national Golden
Gloves champion and Olympian in 1996 (he was on the
same US team along with Floyd Mayweather and
Fernando Vargas), Diaz had a 13-0 record before
walking away from the sport for two years. He took
it up again in 2002, and continued building on his
unbeaten record until he was stopped, in 2005, by
Kendall Holt. Since then he has been undefeated in
his last seven fights (although one of them was a
draw). |

Rich Franklin is going to get a title shot in
Cincinnati or Denver. With a win at the UFC 72
event, former UFC middleweight champion Rich
Franklin (22-2 MMA, 9-1 UFC) secured a shot at
reclaiming his belt. |
He’ll
now face the winner of UFC 73’s fight between
current champ Anderson Silva and top contender Nate
Marquardt, and according to Franklin, it’ll happen
in Cincinnati or Denver.
Franklin made the announcement while speaking at a
UFC-sponsored breakfast at the Associated Press
Sports Editors convention in St. Louis.
Franklin, who survived some late-fight danger to
defeat Yushin Okami in UFC 72’s main event, is one
of the UFC’s top fighters. He defeated Evan Tanner
at UFC 53 to win the middleweight title, but after
two successful title defenses, he lost his belt to
Silva at UFC 64.
Cincinnati’s U.S. Bank Arena has been a longtime
rumored site for the fight, the arena still hopes to
host the event sometime October or December. The
possibility of the event taking place in Denver is a
new development, though. Although now sanctioned for
MMA, the state of Colorado hasn’t hosted an event
since the “Ultimate Ultimate 1995” nearly 12 years
ago. |

On March 27, Station Casinos Vice Chairman Lorenzo Fertitta
and UFC President Dana White announced in a Tokyo press
conference that the sale of the PRIDE Fighting Championships to
Zuffa had been agreed upon, and that the deal would be
consummated on May 1. |
Yet three weeks after the consummation date, the deal was slow
to close, as Zuffa attorneys did their due diligence on PRIDE
assets. In a conference call with the media on Thursday,White
denied that the deal had been closed.
However, two sources tell Sherdog.com that the deal has in fact
been finalized, and that former PRIDE CEO Nobuyuki Sakakibara
has said as much in the last 48 hours.
Citing issues with several PRIDE fighter contracts, on Wednesday
MMAWeekly.com reported that there is a class action lawsuit on
behalf of PRIDE fighters looking to get out of their contracts.
White, in a conversation with the media on Thursday afternoon,
denied any knowledge of the dispute. |
